5 Morning Habits for a Healthier Spine
How You Start Your Day Shapes Your Spine
Your morning sets the tone for the whole day — and that includes your spine. Small habits repeated daily add up to big differences in how your back and neck feel. Here are five simple things you can do right after waking to support a healthy, comfortable spine.
1. Move Before You Rise
After a night of sleep, your muscles and joints may feel stiff. Instead of jumping straight out of bed, do a few gentle stretches first. A slow twist, a knee-to-chest stretch, or simply rolling your shoulders helps wake up your spine gradually.
2. Check Your Pillow
Your pillow should support your neck in line with the rest of your spine — whether you sleep on your back or your side. A pillow that’s too thick or too flat can leave your neck feeling tense by morning.
3. Start the Day Hydrated
Your spinal discs are mostly water, and they act like cushions between your vertebrae. Drinking a glass of water first thing helps those discs stay plump and supportive throughout the day.
4. Mind Your Screen Posture Early
Too many of us check our phones in bed or at breakfast with our heads tilted down. Try holding your screen at eye level and keeping your shoulders relaxed. It’s a small change that protects your neck from unnecessary strain.
5. Stand Tall
When you first get up, take a deep breath and roll your shoulders back. Check in on your posture a few times during your morning routine. Awareness is the first step to lasting change.
